The full name of La Paz is Nuestra Senora de La Paz which is in Spanish. The English translation gives the meaning ‘Our Lady of Peace’. It is commonly known as La Paz. History

A plan for urbanization was ordered by Juan Gutierrez Paniagua in 1549. The plan was purposed to include official buildings, cathedral, plazas and public areas. Spain had great control on La Paz.

In 1781 under the leadership of Tupac Katari, government property and churches were destroyed. The city’s full name was changed to La Paz de Ayacucho in 1825 after the victory of Republicans at Ayacucho over the Spanish army. La Paz was made the de facto seat in national government in 1898.

Even though La Paz F.C. was formed very recently, it rose to the ranks and became the third biggest team in Bolivia. La Paz has the highest Olympic stadium which was certified.


The highest city in the world is also considered as the important cultural center in Bolivia. There are several cathedrals in the city and they belong to colonial times. There are hundreds of museums all over the city. Jaen Street is home for 10 different museums. It was preserved from the Spanish days. Murillo Square was on fire for several times.
